  • IDE's are useful...but are too heavy...great for novices (1 Nov 2004 00:00)
  • I overwhelmingly use vi and the Unix tool set for development. However, I do occasionally use Eclipse. Also, I have done some minimal GUI development using NetBeans. However, I find the basic text editing capabilities of both IDEs to be very limited, clumsy (not least because of the heavy dependence on the mouse), and both editors suffer from relatively poor interactive responsiveness. Some of the responsiveness problem is probably due to the formatting and syntax checking which is indeed useful, but gets in the way of the primary function of the editor--flexible and efficient text editing. Many emacs users will have similar complaints while touting their perceived (and largely mistaken) superiority of emacs over the combination of vi and the Unix tools set. Long ago, learning new editor command sets became largely an unproductive use of time and, while GUI's help the novice or occasional user, few editors have matched the text editing capabilities of emacs or vi with the Unix tool set. • I just love the key strokes. I'm considering Eclipse, but the vi plugin has to improve first. I also like Visual SlickEdit because it has a great vi implementation. (19 Mar 2004 00:00)
  • Am evaluating eclipse (17 Mar 2004 00:00)

  • It's very laborious, but until the company prioritises evaluation and purchase of an alternative tool we are making do. (2 Mar 2004 00:00)
